Buying Your First Guitar…

I look back to when i was only 15 i got my first guitar,an Axe for £84.The guitar would never tune wellproperly, and had an action(the distance between the strings and the fret board) of about an inch.Fortunately with the mass production of far eastern made, and western designed guitars,we can buy good sounding easy to play instruments for very little money.

That being said, the more you spend on your first instrument the better, and cheap guitars uk has a lot of well priced guitars to choose from.A top quality guitar made from good materials will make you sound better, stay in tune longer, and be easier to play.

I like guitars that are unique, its good to be different as a guitarist, image has a lot to do with how people take to your music, for an example, take a look at Buckethead or Slipknot. They both have very different styles but they bring something interesting to the world by hiding behind their masks.People see the masks and are interested to find out what sort of person or musician would where such a thing. And as it turns out the mask has nothing to do with their music, its just a part of their personalty they can use to bring the music to the world.Maybe they don’t feel worthy as their normal selves so they create this new person,a person that is whatever it want to be.Its like a super hero putting on their cape, they can do more as a guiatarist than they can as a banker,or a builder. That is the magic of music,it empowers us to fulfill our dreams and our desires. Also for the less confident in life it is a tool to speak to the world and show then what we’re really made of as this super guitar hero.

A very good trick to sounding good and insipring yourself,is effects. The most important effect a guitarist has is reverb, you will probably not find a guitar album that does not make use of reverb. For lead guitar add overdrive, and even the most simple notes will sound good.A simple multi effects unit can be bought for as little as £50,and is a great practice tool. You will find effects such as overdrive, distortion, flanger, phaser, chorus, wah wah, compressor, sustain, and delay. You can spend ages playing with all the effects, and getting used to the guitaras you do so.People like Joe Satriani,Steve Vai and Jimi Hendrix are well known for there innovation with effects, creating amazing sounds from just playing very simple riffs.

There are many affordable guitar packages for the absolute beginner and/or intermediate guitarist. As a guitar teacher of nearly 10 years i have tried to compile a list of some very affordable, but also very high quality guitars, basses, effects and accessories, for the aspiring musician.I have chosen products that have very good brands and also very good user reviews.

Also you will find for those lucky few who can afford them, some very nice higher range instruments, that are sure to impress, which lets face it,is why we all play guitar.

Also at free guitar tools you will also find free online free guitar tools, such as a metronome, guitar tuner, chord and scale finder. These will be invavluable to any musician,of any level.

At cheap guitars uk i have tried to make a place where all guitarists from the absolute newbie to the seasoned musicain can find all he or she needs to get playing and have fun with their instrument.

Rubbish College Bands?

A lot of people seem to think that bands formed as children or teenagers are a complete waste of time and think that they are all pretty stupid, this is not true at all. I am actually not in a band myself and cannot play an instrument at all, unless you want me to play London’s Burning on the recorder. So you would think because of this I would be on the side of the people, well no I am on the bands because there have been fantastic bands such as Paramore that started off this way.

Is there a way you can actually get people together and encourage them to play?? Well of course you can and the first thing you need to do is get over to your headmaster or dean and request to have a battle of the bands evening. This will actually enable many opportunities for people out there and perhaps get them to feel what it might be like to play in front of a live audience. This is really the stage in which you get to see just how serious the bands are, they will turn up to play live if they are taking things seriously.

The next step in noting if the band you are in has what it takes to actually get somewhere is your ability to play a live set. There is no one out there that wants to listen to someone that is rubbish on one of those guitars and I have been to my fair share of shows from bands that sound great on disc and just fail to do anything live.

So getpractisingas many bands have been noticed for playing in things such as battle of the bands gigs on their bass guitars and electric guitars.

So the next time you see a college band playing live why don’t you actually start taking them seriously?

What The Best Instrument To Learn How To Play?

There are so many instruments out there it can be very difficult to know which one you should really chase when it comes to learning how to play. It really does depend on just how old you are on which instrument I would recommend you learn.

The Recorder

So many people think that this instrument is a bit of a joke but it is a really good first instrument to learn how to play and play smaller songs to. Many children still learn to play these instruments at school simply because not only are they easy to play but cheap to buy too.

The Guitar

Guitars have to be next on the list as they are relatively easy to teach, at least the simple chords are anyway. There are so many songs that can be learnt quite easily however an expert can be playing some of the really great songs.

Drums

Drum Kits also have to be top on the list of instruments to learn. One of the really good things about these is that you can just hammer away at them if you really cannot be bothered to learn them properly. This has to be one of my favourites simply because we have a set at home and when I am in the mood I will smash the hell out of them.

Of course there are many, many more instruments you can pick up and learn but these are some of the well known ones. Other trickier ones include the violin, piano and yes DJ Equipment. Although I have to say it is hard to pick up and learn something like this I will also say that I am not a fan of anything to do with a DJ.

Although many people think it, it isnt easy to learn how to play an instrument so just be warned on this one.

Make Some Noise with a Cigar Box Guitar

Cigar Box Guitar - Goin to Brownsville

I’ve been playing guitar for well over thirty years but I’ve only recently discovered the fun that can be had with easily made cigar box guitars.

If you are new to cigar box guitars I should explain what they are. A cigar box guitar is, as the name suggests, a guitar made from a cigar box. They tend to be home made instruments that use a cigar box as the resonator in the same way that an acoustic guitar uses its guitar body to amplify the sound from the strings.

Back in the 19th century cigars were far more popular than they are today. Wooden boxes were used to package cigars from around the middle of the 19th century and etchings from the American civil war show soldiers playing a cigar box based fiddle.

Turning a cigar box into a guitar like instrument is relatively easy to achieve with a length of wood for the neck and a few tuning pegs. The simplest of cigar box guitars might have only one string, but they are commonly made with three strings and no frets. The steel strings would be fretted using a slide or a bottleneck.

Cigar box based musical instruments are a traditional form of folk instrument that could easily be made using items that would otherwise have been thrown away. In recent years many people have discovered the fun that can be had playing and building home made guitars and other instruments. And home made guitar like instruments don’t have to be based on a cigar box. Many people who build these home made guitars use other boxes for the resonator including oil cans, childrens lunch boxes and even biscuit tins.

So if you are struggling with complex chords on your six string guitar why not put it to one side and get yourself a three string cigar box guitar and get back to some roots music.

The guitars we think of when we hear the word ‘guitar’

So we all think all certain guitars when we hear the word – a guitar that just to us, symbolises what our favourite players uses to achieve that sound and look damn cool while doing it. These are the guitars that have turned mere men into rock gods.

The Fender Strat. When it was made back in 1954, no-one, least of all its creator Leo Fender, had no idea how iconic this guitar was about to become. There are thousands of coopies coming in all colours, but you know a real Strat just by its tone. Thought of as a rock and blues guitar, many players have found it hard to go back to other guitars after playing a Strat. When thinking of Strat guitarists the names that come to mind are Clapton, Hendrix and Buddy Holly to name a few. The legendary reputation of the Stratocaster proceeds it, ensuring it remains an icon for years to come.

The Fender Telecaster. For whatever reason the Telecaster has a country music reputation -maybe due to its twangy sound- but it has its share of rock players to. Jim Root of the metal band Slipknot, and John 5, Marilyn Manson’s former guitarist being two of them. Also created by Leo Fender, the Telecaster came before the Strat, being made in 1949 oringally known as the broadcaster. A threatening law suit over the name saw it swiftly changed to Telecaster, amd the rest is history. Famous players include Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, Andy Summers of the Police and Joe Strummer of the Clash, which shows just how versitile the guitar is.

Gibson les paul. Created by Gibson with Les Paul, the guitar was created in 1952. Suprisingly, the original Les Pauls had single coil pickups in them, as opposed to the humbuckers we know they have -this change happened in 1957. More players than you know have played a Les Paul at some stage -some may surprise you -Clapton, Hendrix and others. Main guitar players of the Les Paul are Slash, and Zakk Wylde -a man who swears by using a Les Paul.

Gibson SG. The SG was created in 1961 to be a redesign of the Les Paul -except that Les Paul himself didnt like the guitar. Renamed ’sg’, which stands for solid guitar, it is much lighter than the Les Paul guitar. Its famous players include Angus Young of AC/DC and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath.

The Fender Strat’s most famous users

The almighty Fender Stratocaster- the guitar most people think of when they hear the word ‘guitars‘. The Stratocaster has been an icon since its beginnings in 1954, and will surely continue to be just that. Lets talk about some of the players who helped ensure the guitar went into legend.

  • Iron Maiden. All three members of Iron Maiden have at one time or another played with a Fender Stratocaster. Other than Steve Harris, Dave Murray is the only other founding member of Iron Maiden that is still with the band. He used Paul Kosoff of the band ‘Free’s guitar up until 1990 when he switched to his signature series model. Murray has his own signature model with Seymour Duncan pickups and Floyd rose system on it -both a rarity for a Fender guitar, let alone a Strat. The two other guitar players in Iron Maiden, Janick Gers and Adrain Smith also play Strats, yet Smith seems to always be photographed with a different guitar in his hands.
  • Eric Clapton. Ol’ ’slow hands’ as hes known, has played as many guitars as most people have had hot dinners, using everything from a Gibson Les Paul from his days in Cream and a Telecaster when he was in the Yardbirds. Clapton is most well know for using a Stratocaster – nicknamed ‘Blackie’ which was used up until 1985, when it was retired. ‘Blackie’ was sold at auction to raise funds for the ‘Crossroads’ rehab centre and the guitar was sold for just under a million dollars. Clapton made the switch to Strats in 1969, and hasnt looked back since.
  • Jimi Hendrix. The man who redefined guitar playing and considered to be the greatest guitar player ever. Hendrix took to playing Strats in 1966, using them for recordings and gigs. Hendrix also tried out many different styles of guitars before choosing a Fender Strat, much like Clapton. Hendrix was left handed and took to stringing the guitars in reverse order and playing them upside down, as left handed guitars cost more and were difficult to find. Eric Clapton’s birthday present to Jimi was supposed to be a left handed Strat, which Jimi never received due to his death. A strat was the guitar which Hendix set on fire on his 1969 Monterey international pop festival performance.

After a Fender guitar now? Look no further.

Guitar building: What to remember about doing it

So, your obsessed with guitars to an almost unhealthy point – there the first and last thing you think about during the day. Every time you dont play you get shakes and you’ve stopped eating because food money needs to go towards buying your guitar’ve sto. Now you want to have a crack at building your own all dancing all singing guitar -so what work will go into making it?

  • The cost. This isnt going to be cheap -you’ve got to consider the prices of the wood for the body and the neck, the pickups, the electronics if your building an electric guitar,  this is going to be pricey for you. Also remember the specialist tools you are going to need to build your guitar.
  • Practice. If your a person whose not had much experiece using wood cutting tools, practice should be a priority. In whatever you do you wont be amazing straight away, and if you start on expensive wood, any mistakes you make can be costly to your wallet. So by practicing on cheaper wood will save you time and if you make a mistake, its all part of the learning experience. Once you get to the point of making you guitar, all the practice will pay off.
  • Wiring. This is for the guys building an electric guitar, because sooner or later, you are going to have to deal with the electronics. Try very hard not to electrocute yourself, as getting the wiring wrong can do just this. Always have a qualified electrician take alook at your work before you put it into the guitar just to be sure.

These are just a few things to consider, but if thats too much work you can always just buy electric guitars from these guys.

How to Tune Your Guitar

Guitarists adopt different ways of tuning. The results of the simplest ways of tuning are slightly different to each other. Beginners should follow the way of tuning that is comfortable to him. Experts adopt the right method of tuning following the pitch of the tune it sounds.

The standard tuning method is followed to tune a guitar. The strings are numbered simultaneously. The strings are numbered from the lowest to the highest string. The thinnest string is the first string that sounds high and the sixth thickest string corresponds to the lowest pitch. The standard tuning is E-A-D-G-B-E. So the sixth string corresponds to the lower E, fifth string-A, fourth string-D, third string-G, second-B and first-High E.

Pitch pipe is cheap and easy to handle.  Pitch pipe is used to tune your guitar so that each string sounds well. Electronic tuner is better than pitch pipes as it gives perfect tune. High pitch electronic keyboard and piano can also set the right tune of your guitar. Tuning forks are available in various types to tune individual strings.  It is cheap and easy to carry. Harmonics is the complicated method of tuning which brings clear and resonating sound.

The easiest method of manual tuning is called Basic Tuning. At first place a finger on the fifth fret of the sixth string and play the fifth and sixth string at the same time. The two notes should sound similar. If the notes sound different then adjust the tuning peg for the fifth string so that when played open it matches with the fifth fretted sixth string. Repeat the same with fourth and third string. Place your finger on the fourth fret of the third string to adjust the tune of second string. Play the fifth fret of the second string to tune the final string. The acoustic electric Ibanez  is a basic choice provided to a new guitarist.

Tuning your guitar frequently makes it sound good and prevents it from going out of tune.

Rock & metal guitar players who brandish Gibsons

Some great guitar players have used Gibson guitars to tear up the fretboard and entertain the masses. Here’s afew of the players that have used Gibson guitars to bring rock & heavy metal to the people.

  • Angus Young. Perhaps the most famous Gibson player on the planet, Angus Young has been donning the school uniform and strapping on the Gibson SG  ever since before most of us were born -and hes still doing it. Angus has rarley ever been seen without his Gibson SG, although he also owns a Gibson Firebird & a 335.
Classic tracks: Highway to hell, back in black, let there be rock
  • Slash. ‘Saul Hudson’, as his mother knows him, has been playing with a Les Paul since during the recording our Guns and Roses classic debut album ‘appetite for destruction’. Suprise piece of trvia: Hes not playing a Gibson, but a Les Paul copy on the album. It didnt matter, as Slash’s use of the instrument made the guitar even more iconic in the 80s and helped to increase sales in the instrument. Slash now has his own signature model Gibson, but uses a 1987 Les Paul standard, which has had its neck repaired numerous times.
Classic tracks: Welcome to the jungle, Sweet child of mine, Slither
  • Tony Iommi. The father of the heavy metal riff, Tony Iommi and Black Sabbath shook the world with their arrival in the seventies. Iommi lost his middle & index fingertips in an industral accident and had to relearn to play guitar all over again -inspired by Django Rienhardt, who had limited use of his 3rd and 4th fingers. Iommi has brandished his Gibson SG since the early days during the recording of the first Sabbath album, when his Fender Stratocaater’s neck pickup broke -and hasnt looked back.
Classic tracks: Paranoid, Black Sabbath, War pigs
  • Zakk Wylde. He was hired by Ozzy after sending in a demo tape of his playing and has been Ozzys main axe man for the most part ever since. Wylde also plays guitar in his ’side project’ band, the black label society, which has its own following. Wylde is best know for his Les Paul customs, with ‘bullseye’ paint job, with has its own signature range, and has been expanded to include a guitar which is a cross between a flying v and a SG into the range.
Classic tracks:Suicide messiah, Still born, In this river
