Once I Learned To Play Guitar Life Got Interesting

As a kid growing up back in the 60s I wanted a guitar but unfortunately my parents thought only hippies and freaks played guitar so I got clothes instead.

It seemed a lifetime but eventually I was old enough to leave home and one of the first things I did was buy that acoustic guitar I had wanted for all those years.

I bought a couple of beginner guides to learning guitar as there was world wide web back then. I was also pretty shy and couldn’t carry a tune so I didn’t want to hire someone to teach me.

Without anyone to show me how to play guitar I soon got frustrated and quit. I even gave my guitar away after a few months of not playing it. Then life got busy, I got married, we had a kid, you know the story.

Actually it was twenty some years later and my interest had changed from guitar to computers and became a career computer instructor.

One year when class returned after Christmas we were talking about the things we got for Christmas.

One student immediately spoke up, you could tell immediately she was annoyed. She told us that her boneheaded husband never listens to her and went on to explain what she didn’t get.

She told us she’d been asking for a computer scanner for months. It would help her with her new business and was the reason she was taking my course. But did she get a scanner for Christmas, not even close. Her husband gave her a Yamaha acoustic guitar.
We couldn’t help but to laugh again but at the same time my brain was thinking about that guitar she got.

I hadn’t thought about guitars for years.

My brain was telling me that now that we have the Internet I could find all kinds of ways to learn guitar. There are ebooks, software, online training and lots of sites with songs and chords for the guitar like at Jamorama.

Gail wanted a scanner, not a guitar. I, as a computer nerd had more than one scanner so I said we should swap with each other. Gail nearly jumped out of her chair. I thought she was going to hug me or something. She said I’ll have the stupid guitar here tomorrow if that’s okay.

She was waiting in the parking lot when I arrived. She was never early, always on time but never early. I guess she was excited as I was. I was the proud owner of an acoustic Yamaha 425 guitar.

With the Internet available to me learning to play guitar was so much easier. I started learning when I was 47 and today I am 58 and still play every single day.
