So we all think all certain guitars when we hear the word – a guitar that just to us, symbolises what our favourite players uses to achieve that sound and look damn cool while doing it. These are the guitars that have turned mere men into rock gods.

The Fender Strat. When it was made back in 1954, no-one, least of all its creator Leo Fender, had no idea how iconic this guitar was about to become. There are thousands of coopies coming in all colours, but you know a real Strat just by its tone. Thought of as a rock and blues guitar, many players have found it hard to go back to other guitars after playing a Strat. When thinking of Strat guitarists the names that come to mind are Clapton, Hendrix and Buddy Holly to name a few. The legendary reputation of the Stratocaster proceeds it, ensuring it remains an icon for years to come.

The Fender Telecaster. For whatever reason the Telecaster has a country music reputation -maybe due to its twangy sound- but it has its share of rock players to. Jim Root of the metal band Slipknot, and John 5, Marilyn Manson’s former guitarist being two of them. Also created by Leo Fender, the Telecaster came before the Strat, being made in 1949 oringally known as the broadcaster. A threatening law suit over the name saw it swiftly changed to Telecaster, amd the rest is history. Famous players include Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, Andy Summers of the Police and Joe Strummer of the Clash, which shows just how versitile the guitar is.

Gibson les paul. Created by Gibson with Les Paul, the guitar was created in 1952. Suprisingly, the original Les Pauls had single coil pickups in them, as opposed to the humbuckers we know they have -this change happened in 1957. More players than you know have played a Les Paul at some stage -some may surprise you -Clapton, Hendrix and others. Main guitar players of the Les Paul are Slash, and Zakk Wylde -a man who swears by using a Les Paul.

Gibson SG. The SG was created in 1961 to be a redesign of the Les Paul -except that Les Paul himself didnt like the guitar. Renamed ’sg’, which stands for solid guitar, it is much lighter than the Les Paul guitar. Its famous players include Angus Young of AC/DC and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath.

There are a huge choice of keyboards and digital pianos available today -and quite often that choice can seem really overwhelming. So which one is right for you? Which one will best suit your needs? Even a quick online search will give you more options than it is possible to get through in a week -so before you go out and buy your keyboard, there are a few tips that you need to consider.

1)  Affordability. Take the time to look around and get the best deal you can -set yourself a top level that you would pay and don’t go over that. Because the selection is so large, it really shouldn’t be too difficult in finding one that will fit your particular budget, no matter how conservative it is!

2)   Weighted action versus synth action. Weighted action simply means that the keys are heavier and therefore behave more like an acoustic piano. Synth action simply means that the keys are a little lighter.  Just a couple of the more technical terms you may come into contact with when buying your keyboard. The weight of the keys transmits to the style of play that you are buying the keyboard for: weighted action is great for the trained pianist or someone who is looking to develop their piano skills; synth action is more suited to those who play a more synthy or techno style, as the keys can be played a lot faster.

3) Consider the number of keys. If you’re looking to play about with sound development, then you want to make sure that you have as many keys as possible. The number of keys can range across the board, from as little as 20 right up to 88. As ever, the choice on this remains squarely with the needs of the customer, i.e.: you. If you are purchasing your keyboard for things that only require a small range like samples, you only need a few keys. It may seem that you have as much of a choice when it comes to the number of keys as you did in looking for them in the first place!

4) Is it worth getting an onboard sequencer? A simple answer to a simple question here: if you are working with a computer, then yes it most definitely is. If you do not plan to work with a computer, then it probably won’t be necessary.

5) Do I need a workstation? If you are already using a computer which handles all of that, paying extra for a workstation may not be the most economical vantage point. This should be weighed against the fact that the workstation is, however, an incredible tool to use. The workstation on your keyboard will perform a myriad of functions, from sequencing to effects.

6) Velocity and aftertouch features. The aftertouch feature deals more with the sound that is produced after the keys have been pressed, like when they are resting on the keybed. The velocity feature relates to how the sound is produced relative to the amount of pressure given to the keys, for example how quickly they are pressed. Whatever use you have in mind for your keyboard, then velocity and aftertouch is something you should definitely be looking for.

7) Maneuverability. If you are purchasing a keyboard in order to take it to gigs, then are another large number of factors that you should consider. Think carefully about getting a hard case for protection, and when you are choosing think carefully about how easy it is to carry -do you really want to be lugging a large heavy object from one gig to another?

Think about what is available online -this is often the best way to buy a new keyboard -with the added advantage that they will deliver straight to your door! When you take the time to find the best keyboard, one that will suit your needs and your goals, then you are much more likely to develop the long-term relationship with your instrument.

The almighty Fender Stratocaster- the guitar most people think of when they hear the word ‘guitars‘. The Stratocaster has been an icon since its beginnings in 1954, and will surely continue to be just that. Lets talk about some of the players who helped ensure the guitar went into legend.

• Iron Maiden. All three members of Iron Maiden have at one time or another played with a Fender Stratocaster. Other than Steve Harris, Dave Murray is the only other founding member of Iron Maiden that is still with the band. He used Paul Kosoff of the band ‘Free’s guitar up until 1990 when he switched to his signature series model. Murray has his own signature model with Seymour Duncan pickups and Floyd rose system on it -both a rarity for a Fender guitar, let alone a Strat. The two other guitar players in Iron Maiden, Janick Gers and Adrain Smith also play Strats, yet Smith seems to always be photographed with a different guitar in his hands.
• Eric Clapton. Ol’ ’slow hands’ as hes known, has played as many guitars as most people have had hot dinners, using everything from a Gibson Les Paul from his days in Cream and a Telecaster when he was in the Yardbirds. Clapton is most well know for using a Stratocaster – nicknamed ‘Blackie’ which was used up until 1985, when it was retired. ‘Blackie’ was sold at auction to raise funds for the ‘Crossroads’ rehab centre and the guitar was sold for just under a million dollars. Clapton made the switch to Strats in 1969, and hasnt looked back since.
• Jimi Hendrix. The man who redefined guitar playing and considered to be the greatest guitar player ever. Hendrix took to playing Strats in 1966, using them for recordings and gigs. Hendrix also tried out many different styles of guitars before choosing a Fender Strat, much like Clapton. Hendrix was left handed and took to stringing the guitars in reverse order and playing them upside down, as left handed guitars cost more and were difficult to find. Eric Clapton’s birthday present to Jimi was supposed to be a left handed Strat, which Jimi never received due to his death. A strat was the guitar which Hendix set on fire on his 1969 Monterey international pop festival performance.

So by practicing on cheaper wood will save you time and if you make a mistake, its all part of the learning experience. Once you get to the point of making you guitar, all the practice will pay off.
• Wiring. This is for the guys building an electric guitar, because sooner or later, you are going to have to deal with the electronics. Try very hard not to electrocute yourself, as getting the wiring wrong can do just this. Always have a qualified electrician take alook at your work before you put it into the guitar just to be sure.

These are just a few things to consider, but if thats too much work you can always just buy electric guitars from these guys.

The human ear really is a marvellous organ – you can train it just like any other muscle in the human body. Also, the more you train it, the stronger and more efficient it gets, just like all your other muscles.

For some people, playing the piano by ear comes quite naturally – they know as soon as they hear a particular series of notes or chords how that combination was played and where the persons hands were on the keyboard. By hearing the same piece of music over and over again you will find it much easier to recognise. Think of it like training a dog – the more you shout a command at the dog, the more it gets used to hearing it and what the necessary response is.

A good example of this ear training is the major third. If you were able to find a very patient friend who didn’t mind sitting at your piano for two days straight and playing nothing but major thirds (for example C and E or F and A), the next time you hear a car horn you would immediately recognise the sound! This is because the vast majority of car horns are “factory-tuned” to a major third.

It’s a wonderful thing to be able to recognise the sounds all around you. Imagine if you walking down the street and were able to identify that train whistle as producing a tritone portamento descending! And not just train whistles – car horns and even tannoy announcements will sound completely different when your ear is trained to recognise those sounds. You’ll be amazed at how often you’ll recognise sounds as they occur in everyday life all around you.

The best solution to this that we have found is get hold of a tape recorder, and record the music. If you can find a recorder with a numerical counter on it, all the better, as you are then able to rewind to any specific spot you like. This is really the initial step – you have to listen to the sounds in order to be able to recognize them. It can be difficult to find a friend who doesn’t mind playing the same chords over and over again whilst you listen.

Most piano teachers, when teaching, prefer to begin with melodic intervals such as skips of a major third or a perfect sixth, so this is a reasonable place for you to start also. You might also want to think about chord progressions as well – they can be a bit more fun than the melodic intervals, and tend to keep you a little more engaged.

Training your ear to recognize specific sounds and thus transferring them onto the piano is a time-honored tradition that has served many people well in the past. It can be done, and it can be done relatively simply. There’s no reason that you cannot do it yourself – learning to play the piano could not be simpler!
